Craft Storage - Taborets, Carts, and Cabinets

Art and craft storage solutions for art supplies and scrapbook supplies include cabinets, carts and taborets.

Most crafters and scrapbookers are familiar with storage carts and cabinets, but possibly haven't seen or heard of a taboret. So, let me share a secret that is from the fine art world of painters, architects and graphic designers. A taboret is a small portable stand or cabinet with drawers that have been used in the fine art world for years, because they are easy to roll up beside a drawing or drafting table to have art supplies and tools at hand. There is another meaning for the word - it refers to a short stool without a back or arms.  That isn't what I want to show here, though.

So a taboret is part storage/part furniture and is a rolling organizer cabinet (on wheels or casters) usually found in art stores or drafting supply stores. But these are just as handy for craft rooms or scrapbook organizing as they are for artist's studios.

Here are some basic plastic drawer taborets:

Rolling Taboret     Mayline rolling organizer taboret

You can see that the one on the left (the Alvin Rover Mobile Taboret) would be useful for smaller supplies, like scissors or paints and brushes. But, it seems a bit expensive! The taboret on the right (the Mayline Organizer Cart) is more affordable, but be aware that it wouldn't hold 12 x 12 paper sufficiently (though 8.5 x 11 would fit!). And I like that the supplies can be stored without visual clutter.

Now for some wooden taboret examples:

Studio Designs Colony Taboret     SMI Natural Birch Taboret

On the left is a beautiful wooden taboret - the Studio Designs Colony Taboret. It is actually under $100 and just as useful as the more expensive plastic products disucssed above. An big pluss is that the dimensions (25½" high × 15¼" wide × 18¼" deep) allow for storage of 12 x 12 inch scrapbook or craft cardstock and paper, as well as photo or scrapbook albums. On the right - the SMI Taboret - is a natural birchwood cabinet that can be finished in any shade that you like. It has more storage space that the Studio Designs taboret. And the dimensions of the drawers (13½"W × 13¾"D) would fit fairly large paper, too.

So, as you look for ways to store your craft supplies, beads, sewing stuff, scrapbooking papers and embellishments, don't forget to look at taborets as an option to add to your art 'n craft room.
