Scrapbook Supplies: The Basics

Scrapbooking Supplies: What You Need to Get Started

There are several basic supplies that you will need to get started scrapbooking. The list below is just the beginning. There are so many customized papers and albums – the list could go on and on, but this articles just lists the main ingredients:

Albums – There are various sizes of albums – larger ones allow for more room to be creative. You can choose different styles of albums with colors or themes for whatever your scrapbook is going to highlight. When you buy albums, also get extra pages for them that are the same size and from the same manufacturer.

A good pair of scissors. Keep one pair of scissors as your scrapbook scissors. They will stay sharp if you only use them for your paper and other scrap-booking materials.

Adhesives. Acid-free adhesives are recommended (they won’t discolor the pictures, cards, notes or photos that you use them on. Adhesives come in many forms: double sided tapes, foam squares and even dimensional dots. Foam and other adhesives can give your book a 3D appearance, since they give depth to materials you use with them.

Cardstock and paper. Paper colors can accent the photos or other items in your scrapbook. Cardstock also comes in die-cut shapes that add interest and can be used as a frame or border for areas or photos.

Assorted pens. Pens with permanent, archival quality inks that have fine tips work best for labeling, journaling or handwriting in your scrapbook. Dual-tipped pens have a fine tip on one end and a wider-tip on the other (good for bolder writing).

Beyond the basics:
You’ll find that as you begin to create scrapbooks, you’ll start to need more and more tools to make the project look better and go a little faster, too.

12" Paper Trimmer. So much easier than scissors and safer than a sharp cutting blade such as X-acto knives!

Extras. There are lots of extras that can be used to embellish your pages such as buttons, stickers, metallic markers and other items that add some pizzazz.

A notebook of your ideas. Keep notes of creative ideas for themes or layouts as they come to you, so you’ll have them written down to refer to for future scrapbooks.

And then there is one essential ingredientyou! Your ideas, your photos, your experiences, your style – those are really what will make your scrapbooks unique creations.
