Paper - we use it almost every day without considering what a great invention it is and how it has contributed to the development of civilization. The origin of this word comes from a Greek word for the material used to write on in Egypt, called papyrus. Papyrus plants were beaten into strips to make this early writing surface. Modern papermaking methods, beginning in 105 AD during the Han dynasty in China, are considered one of the four great inventions from that country (the other three are gunpowder, the compass, and printmaking).
